2017 Concert Season

Concert Series 1 – March 2017

With performances on 18th and 19th March, the first concert of the year opened with Sibelius’s tone poem, Finlandia. Local teacher and Orchestra member, Catherine Barnett, then performed as soloist in the Saint-Saëns Cello Concerto No. 1, which was followed by a performance of Dvořák’s Symphony No. 8. Concert Series 2 – June 2017

Beethoven’s Fidelio Overture opened the concerts on 17th and 18th June. Conductor, Allan Stiles then handed the baton to Eliza-Jane Corley, the Orchestra’s timpanist and percussionist, to conduct the Telemann Viola Concerto in G which featured Tim Senior, lead violist with the Orchestra. Then Allan Stiles returned to the podium to conduct Sunset Fantasy by Alfred Hill and the Symphony in D Minor by César Franck. VIEW PROGRAMME

Concert Series 3 – September 2017

Rossini’s William Tell Overture opened the concerts on 9th and 10th September. The Russian born flautist, Svetlana Yaroslavskaya, gave the world première performance of the Flute Concerto by contemporary Australian composer, Graham Powning. The program concluded with Tchaikovsky’s masterpiece, his Symphony No. 4. VIEW PROGRAMME

Concert Series 4 – December 2017

A Festive Spectacular was the description for the final concert of 2017 performed on 2nd and 3rd December. It began with Star Wars Medley by John Williams, followed by Alfred Hill’s orchestral sonnet, The Call of a Bird. Grieg’s Peet Gynt Suite No. 1 completed the first half. After interval the Orchestra was joined by dancers from the Highlands-based Angus and & Lucinda’s Academie de Danse to perform several of the characteristic dances from Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite. The concert ended with an assortment of well-known Christmas songs and carols interwoven by Leroy Anderson in his popular work, A Christmas Festival. VIEW PROGRAMME
